Beach Closed For Endangered Chicks

Beachgoers are being asked to make way for endangered birds recently hatched along the Oregon Inlet.

The National Park service shut down nearly a mile of beach near the Bonner Bridge to protect the piping plovers.

The fragile, 6-inch birds are protected under the Endangered Species Act.

The beach could reopn in about a month after the chicks can fly, said park rangers.
