FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Former Fayetteville State University chancellor Lloyd V. "Vic" Hackley was named Thursday as the school's interim chancellor, replacing T.J. Bryan, who has resigned effective July 23.

Hackley was FSU chancellor from 1988 to 2004 and is a former president of the North Carolina Community College System. For the past year, he has been interim chancellor of North Carolina A&T State University.

“As chancellor emeritus of FSU, Vic Hackley has a deep understanding of that campus, the larger Fayetteville community and the needs of the surrounding region," University of North Carolina President Erskine Bowles said in a statement. "As he proved time and time again during his recent tenure as chancellor on an interim basis at North Carolina A&T, Vic tackles every challenge handed to him with full commitment, great passion, and absolute integrity."

The UNC Board of Governors formally accepted Bryan's resignation Thursday.

Bryan will keep her tenured faculty position at FSU and will be placed on research leave for the rest of year while continuing to receive her salary. After Jan. 1, Bryan will receive 60 percent of her salary through the end of the spring semester.

Beginning in the fall 2008 semester, she will hold a nine-month faculty position at FSU at a normal salary grade.
