The race for the Democratic presidential nomination is a three-way dead heat among North Carolina voters, according to a new poll.

U.S. Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama each garnered 27 percent of the response in a new Public Policy Polling survey, while former U.S. Sen. John Edwards was the favorite of 26 percent of the respondents. Eleven percent of those polled were undecided, while 10 percent said they would vote for another candidate.

On the Republican side, former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson continues to lead the race, with 34 percent support. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani's support fell for the second month in a row, to 15 percent, while former House Speaker Newt Gingrich garnered 13 percent support. Another 21 percent of GOP voters said they were still undecided.

Public Policy Polling, a Raleigh group that represents many Democratic clients, surveyed 629 likely Democratic primary voters and 583 likely Republican primary voters on Monday. The Democratic and Republican surveys have margins of error of 3.8 percent and 4 percent, respectively.
