Arrest in Johnston County in 2004 Slaying

print friendly

An arrest in Smithfield on Tuesday cracked a 3-year-old murder case, Four Oaks police said.

They charged Matthew R. Erby, 22, of Wilmington with the 2004 stabbing death of Shelett Mary Curry of Smithfield.

Curry was found stabbed to death in a room of the Traveler’s Inn off I-95 on Feb. 29, 2004.

Police said they and State Bureau of Investigation agents had recently developed new information that led to Erby. He was arrested without incident in Smithfield, they said.

Police said the arrest did not close the case, and their investigation was continuing.

i went to high school with this guy. he was one year older than me -- i've seen him around and spoke to him since this happened. his sister and him are like night and day. such a shame that people resort to such things .. but i'm glad that this has finally been cracked and her family can finally find some peace. such a crazy thought that i knew such a disturbed person.

I personally knew this young man when he was little...Sometimes parents loose check of where their children are and only focus on themselves. I don't know what happened here. Such a life to be lost...But I too am tired of the thugs and situations they place people in. Justice for all.....

Good job. Hope his capture will help her family fined peace

Thanks for not letting it go cold...Good Job!!!

Good job to the men and women in law enforcement that have locked this thug up. Keep up the good work.
