Fayetteville, N.C. — Interstate 95 closed in both directions in Cumberland County for a time late Sunday afternoon while fire crews took care of a recreational vehicle that caught fire and had a large propane tank underneath, sheriff's deputies said.
The fire was reported at 5:04 p.m., and northbound lanes remained shut down for about an hour as a safety precaution because of the gas tank, the Cumberland County Emergency Operations Center reported. Smoke from the fire was visible from downtown Fayetteville.
Southbound lanes had been reopened earlier.
Deputies said the fire apparently began with engine problems or some other source and was not the result of an accident. The vehicle was destroyed, officials said.
Two people in the RV escaped unharmed.
