Fire in RV With Propoane Tank Closes I-95 for a Time

e-mail print friendly

Interstate 95 closed in both directions in Cumberland County for a time late Sunday afternoon while fire crews took care of a recreational vehicle that caught fire and had a large propane tank underneath, sheriff's deputies said.

The fire was reported at 5:04 p.m., and northbound lanes remained shut down for about an hour as a safety precaution because of the gas tank, the Cumberland County Emergency Operations Center reported. Smoke from the fire was visible from  downtown Fayetteville.

Southbound lanes had been reopened earlier.

Deputies said the fire apparently began with engine problems or some other source and was not the result of an accident. The vehicle was destroyed, officials said.

Two people in the RV escaped unharmed.

That is why they shut down both north and south bound lanes. The propane tank might have blown up and caused other problems.

Hi Sabertooth. I've done the same thing. I think in this instance it was an issue with the engine causing the fire and not the propane tank although the tank could have blown as a result of the engine fire.

Propane Tank Underneath on an RV? - Why would they find it necessary to point that out? Don't all RV's carry Propane Tanks? Glad no one was hurt.

I hate to say it since I am a camper as well, but some campers love to travel on the highway with their refrigerators being cooled by propane gas. Oh well, I done said it....
