Raleigh Cuts Plaza Design Budget

e-mail print friendly

The Raleigh City Plaza project took another hit Tuesday when the City Council voted to cut the budget by $5 million.

Designers now have $16 million to build Raleigh's so-called "public living room" on the south end of Fayetteville Street. The plaza will feature lights and fountains.

Designers said scaling back the project is a last resort, and they aren't sure how they will make up the funding shortfall.

Last year, the council nixed a design for the site by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa, saying it would have blocked the view along Fayetteville Street.

Typical Isley and Talafaro (whatever the councilwomans's name is) slowing down progress. Here we go again, cutting back to generic, just like they did for Fayetteville Street (another reason not to go downtown, NOTHING is completed with first class or originality in mind). They approve the design, then cut back, just like all other downtown projects (ie that ugly Marriott and bland convention center!). This will not be a living room for downtown, it will be a bathroom (with no water, lighting or flat panel displays)

Did you the the St Louis Arch, one of the most recognizable city icons in the world, came about through a public contest & call for designs? Why doesn't the Raleigh City council hold such a public contest?

What is Raleigh really known for? What should our plaza have to represent the city?

hmmmm- school system needs some money- how about cutting it all and putting it where it's needed. The plaza will only have homeless people on it in a few years if we don't get our education first.

We need a subway system

Definition: Plaza - Upscale location for street people and drug dealers.
