Disabled Cars to Get Hook More Quickly

Raleigh, N.C. — To clean up North Carolina highways in the name of safety, the state House passed a bill Wednesday that calls for abandoned vehicles on the shoulder of highway to be removed within 24 hours.

Under current law, abandoned cars can legally sit on the roadside for two days.

House Bill 563 also makes changes to traffic rules when the power is out at a stoplight. The proposal would require every vehicle to treat the intersection like a four-way stop.

Vehicles on main roads are currently encouraged to treat the intersection as if they had a blinking yellow light, meaning they need to exercise caution but don't have to stop.

It will never apply to typical situations. Junkers will still sit on the side of the road for weeks. This only allows 'authorities' to remove a car causing an actual traffic impediment within 24 vs. 48 hours. We won't really see a difference, you know?! LOL

I remember seeing a car on the side for about 2 weeks on US-1S / US-64W. Eventually, I go through the area again and there's a Cary PD cruiser hiding behind it. I'm thinking "only in North Carolina."

I think that is a little harsh. Moving from out of state and not having any family here - sometimes things happen. I do agree with enforcing old law of two days - but I must admit I have seen cars on the side of the road for days, weeks and even up to a month on some occasions. So dont try to write new proposals until you enforce old ones.

Currently can sit for 2 days??? I've passed by some cars that have been sitting for over a week. Again, how about enforcing current laws...it makes more sense.
