Disabled Cars to Get Hook More Quickly

Raleigh, N.C. — To clean up North Carolina highways in the name of safety, the state House passed a bill Wednesday that calls for abandoned vehicles on the shoulder of highway to be removed within 24 hours.

Under current law, abandoned cars can legally sit on the roadside for two days.

House Bill 563 also makes changes to traffic rules when the power is out at a stoplight. The proposal would require every vehicle to treat the intersection like a four-way stop.

Vehicles on main roads are currently encouraged to treat the intersection as if they had a blinking yellow light, meaning they need to exercise caution but don't have to stop.
