N.C. Zoo Welcomes New 'Members'

e-mail print friendly

Seven animals arrived at the zoo between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. Monday.

A 6-foot, 300-pound male harp seal will now call the zoo’s Rocky Coast exhibit home. The seal was found malnourished off the coast of New Jersey two months ago. Following rehabilitation at the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in New Jersey, the center chose the North Carolina Zoo to keep the seal.

The zoo also received six southern white rhinos. The group includes three adult females, two male calves and a female calf. The rhinos arrived after a stay at a sanctuary in Florida.

The rhinos’ arrival is part of an $8 million expansion of the zoo’s elephant and rhinoceros exhibits. Zoo officials hope to release the rhinos in the African Plains habitat by mid-summer.

we went and it was a lot of fun! The only thing I would have changed is asking the taller adults to back up a little bit after they see so that the younger kids can see.

The polar bear exhibit is fantastic!

How wonderful that the seal was saved and rehabilitated and now has a nice home. And how wonderful that some white rhinos have been saved as well. They're nearly extinct in the wild because of their horns.

Praising God.

God bless.

Have to agree. Was at the zoo last weekend, and was a great visit.

The Aviary was fantastic. You have to sit still and watch for movement, but then a whole world of winged nature opens up to you. In some cases, it seemed as if the birds were posing.

Great job N.C. Now if only other departments of the state could do just as good.

If you plan a zoo visit and you have never been, plan it on a cool day and get there when the zoo opens. It is over a 5 mile hike through the woods to get completely through the zoo. It is really beautiful and worth every minute of your time. The animals also don't like to move much if it is hot.

While they do great work at the Asheboro zoo it's just ashamed that these animals have to be in capitvity to survive. We are slowly killing our planet. Animals are a good indicator of how the earth is doing and for species that are getting wiped out on a daily basis concern me.
