Raleigh leaders want to know what the community is looking for in the city's next police chief.

A survey on the city's website wants to know what citizens see as the challenges facing the city. City leaders also want to know what skills a police chief should have and what two questions Raleigh residents would ask in the interview.

The deadline to respond is Oct. 11.

After five years as Raleigh's police chief, Harry Dolan is retiring at the end of the month.

He took over in September 2007 from former police Chief Jane Perlov, who left for a job in Charlotte.

Dolan has not said what he plans to do.

Deputy Chief Cassandra Deck-Brown will serve as interim chief while the department considers a long-term replacement.

HONESTY,INTEGRITY,ETHICS,NO RECORD.......Gee, does such a person exist?

Get rid of the Raleigh police. Fold them into the county sheriff's system and get rid of one expensive bureaucracy. then down the road all police are rolled into the State police, and we have one police force instead of multiple levels.

I want a chief that is not soft on traffic crime!

Whoa there. No need for that. Too many quotas now. Jeeze............

sctech maybe the southern candidates are not smart enough.

Have current officers make the choice of who they think is the best leader from the top 15 officers within the Department. They know who is the most involved, who is the best leader, communicator, with the most ethical qualities. There are several current officers that are extremely well qualified to be the chief of any large metropolitan police department. No need to get somebody else's problem. Harry came with lawsuits pending in Michigan and addded many problems to Raleigh. Hire from within.
