Raleigh city leaders marked the upcoming retirement of Police Chief Harry Dolan with a public send-off on Friday.

After 32 years in law enforcement, Police Chief Harry Dolan announced last month that he will step down from the post on Oct. 1.

Dolan, 54, joined the Raleigh Police Department in September 2007, replacing Jane Perlov as police chief.

Supporters showed up Friday afternoon at Fletcher Memorial Hall at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts to honor his service, from beat cop to the city's top cop.

Dolan said he will miss all the people who helped make his time in Raleigh so productive.

"There's so many people I love and admire, and right now, I am very, very grateful and humbled – not feeling I am deserving as I should be for your support," he told the crowd.

Deputy Chief Cassandra Deck-Brown will serve as interim chief while the department considers a long-term replacement.

Dolan has not said what he plans to do after retirement.
