Fayetteville, N.C. — A Fort Bragg paratrooper has died of injuries he received in a car crash while traveling last week in Georgia, base officials said Wednesday.

Staff Sgt. Anthony C. Burge-Ortiz, 35, of Warner Robins, Ga., was a signal support systems specialist with the 82nd Airborne Division.

Burge-Ortiz joined the Army in January 1997, was first assigned to Camp Humphries in Korea and was deployed multiple times in support of operations New Dawn, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.

“Staff Sgt. Anthony Burge-Ortiz was a quiet professional who loved to lead and train paratroopers," said Capt. Damon N. Knauss of Battalion S6. "As a devoted father and friend, he was always there to help fellow paratroopers in whatever they needed. (He) will be greatly missed by all in the (division).”

Burge-Oritz earned numerous awards and decorations, including the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal and a Humanitarian Service Medal.

He is survived by his wife, Shakira, their son, Caleb, and his parents, Gregory Burge and Maria Ortiz.

The wreck, which happened Friday in Bolingbroke, Ga., remains under investigation.
