Officials with the Robeson County Sheriff's Office cancelled a Silver Alert for a 16-year-old cognitively impaired girl who went missing Saturday morning from a home in Maxton.

The North Carolina Center for Missing Persons issued a Silver Alert for Megan Nicole Locklear around 11:30 a.m., the alert was cancelled at 5:25 p.m.

No details were given as why the alert was canceled.

Developed in 2007, Silver Alert is a system to quickly notify the public about missing endangered adults who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.

It also allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.
