Raleigh police said Tuesday that they plan to charge an Athens Drive High School student who allegedly shoved a school administrator into a plate-glass window during a lunchtime fight.

Steven Miller, an assistant principal, was taken to a local hospital around noon Tuesday after he was injured while trying to break up the altercation.

He was treated and later released.

Investigators did not identify the student or say what charges might be filed.

Students said there were numerous fights within about 15 minutes and that Miller was trying to break up one of those, near the cafeteria.

Sophomore McKenzie McCarthy said a student grabbed Miller's shoulders and shoved him into the glass.

"To see him just manhandled like that, it was really scary," she said. "It's like something that happened right in front of you, and your principal is harmed, and you're like, 'What are you going to do?'"

Mike Charbonneau, a spokesman for the Wake County Public School System, said school administrators are looking into what started the fights but that none of them appeared to be related.

"Safety and security is the top priority for all of the students in Wake County, and anytime an incident happens, our security staff has procedures and protocols in place," Charbonneau said. "They jump right in to ensure that all students stay safe in the process."

Charbonneau did not say what disciplinary action might be taken against students.

Take all the kids that are not one bit interested in learning and put them in an Academy. That way their little feelings won't be hurt. Put police on every floor and arm the teachers with hand guns for their protection. Discipline will be having them beat each other to a pulp. Let the Best/Worst future criminal win. Then give them a diploma. We will then have prepared them for their new world - career prisoner.

The trouble makers are emboldened because the administrators are weak. They are most likely the result of bad parenting and have never had to face any serious consequences in their lives. They are the future convicts of America and they might as well just start now.

Gangs and whigs. Kick them out on the street. We need someone to pick up our trash, pick our crops and perform other no-education jobs anyhow. Maybe then we can stop winking and complaining about illegal immigration.

An absolute crock. There are actually laws that an EC child cannot be suspended for more than 10 days. I found a knife on a kid and they didn't miss 1 day of school. School administrators are petrified a parent will go to the board if little johnny or sally get suspended.--Herecomesthetwister

Well, maybe it is time for the parents of the students who want to be at school to go to the school board and make some noise for disciplinary changes. If they principal's won't properly punish the offenders, maybe the principals need to go. It is time for parents to get involved in get the necessary changes enacted. Apparently principals don't want their suspension numbers to look back. If that is the case then how can we be sure our children are safe?

Suspension does not work. Take away privileges. Sports, clubs, extra-curricular activities, field trips and even certain food items in the cafeteria can be eliminated. And let the students know that these things are lost because behavior indicates they were not earned.
