At least one man opened fire on police during a drug bust in Goldsboro Friday night, sparking a shootout that left a man dead and police officer injured.

Goldsboro police and Wayne County sheriff's deputies were executing a narcotics search warrant at 712 Slaughter St. around 10 p.m. when the men shot at them. Officers fired back, killing one man and injuring another.

Police said they are still trying to identify the man who was killed. Both the second suspect and a police officer suffered minor injuries

Thomas Arthur Austin Jr., 31, was charged with five counts of attempted murder. He was jailed under a $1 million bond and scheduled to appear in court Monday.

Police said the other two men taken into custody would face drug charges. Their identifies and those of the officers involved haven't been released.

The State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the incident, which is standard procedure in any officer-involved shooting.

Austin has seven convictions dating to 1998, including drug trafficking and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to state Division of Adult Correction records. He has served five jail terms totaling more than four years and is on probation for a May conviction for driving with a revoked license.
