A Scotland County sheriff's deputy who rescued a woman trapped inside her trunk during a 2011 kidnapping died Sunday, authorities said.

It wasn't clear how or when Lt. Tommy Butler died, but officials with the sheriff's office confirmed the news late Sunday.

In February 2011, Butler said God put him in the right place at the right time to rescue a woman who had been kidnapped by a man and his girlfriend and forced to drive at gunpoint.

No other information about Butler's death has been released.

And your Grandfather probably said the same......

Sad for a good man to die before their time.

RIP Deputy......thank you for your service

I didn't know Tommy personally but I remember he was always very friendly. I am sorry for his family and freinds' loss.

Tommy was a great guy and this is a loss for everyone that knew him. You will be missed Tommy
