Durham, N.C. — A Durham man is facing a slew of charges after authorities say he led a sheriff's deputy on an 11-mile, high-speed chase Friday night.

Maurice Lamont Powell, 32, of 2901 Cannada Ave., was charged with driving while license revoked, speeding, felony fleeing to elude arrest, resisting a public officer, possession of marijuana and reckless driving. He was being held Saturday at the Durham County jail under a $75,500 bond.

Powell also faces a driving while license revoked charge out of Duplin County.

The chase began near the intersection of South Miami Boulevard and Pleasant Drive around 10:15 p.m. when Powell's Honda Accord crossed the center line and nearly hit a patrol car driven by Deputy V.S. Buchanan, authorities said.

Buchanan tried to stop Powell, but he began to flee on South Miami Boulevard. The deputy followed and the chase reached speeds of 80 mph as it continued for 11 miles on Marly Drive, Angier Avenue, Tyonek Driver, South Miami Boulevard, Highway 70, Interstate 85 North, East Club Boulevard, Dearborn Drive, Old Oxford Road, Craven Street and Martin Street.

Powell eventually got out of his car on the 600 block of Martin Street and tried to outrun Buchanan, authorities said.

Several more deputies and a state trooper joined in the pursuit, and Powell was eventually taken into custody. 

Buchanan and another deputy suffered minor injuries in the chase. They were treated at Durham Regional Hospital.
