Police suspect that a Raleigh man was drunk early Saturday when, they say, he ran a red light and struck another car, killing a man and seriously injuring a woman.

Police said that David Lawrence Coker Jr. drove his 2006 Audi through a red light and struck the driver's side of Dodge sedan at 60 mph in the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and T.W. Alexander Drive around 4:40 a.m.

The Dodge driver, Kossivi Akpene Gadegbeku, 42, of Raleigh, was killed. His passenger, Laura Cecilia Galdamez, 32, of Durham, was seriously injured but in stable condition at the intensive care unit at Duke University Hospital later Saturday.

Coker, 32, of 2607 Saint Mary's St., suffered minor injuries and was taken to Duke Hospital's emergency room.

He was charged with driving while impaired, felony death by motor vehicle and felony serious injury by motor vehicle.

Police said they suspect Coker was impaired by alcohol and were awaiting the results of tests on him. Police also tested Gadegbeku for alcohol impairment.
