A 24-year-old man drowned Monday after swimming in Tucker Lake near Benson, authorities said.

Johnston County sheriff’s deputies said the man was swimming with his fiancée in the lake off Allens Crossroads Road about 3:30 p.m. when they began having trouble. It appeared both were weak swimmers, deputies said.

The woman was able to get out of the water, but the man, whose name was not released pending notification of family, continued to struggle. A lifeguard and bystanders helped get him out of the water.

He was taken to Johnston Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The drowning is the sixth in the region this month:

July 7 – Cody Hugdins, 5, wandered away from a family cookout and drowned in Lake Hickory. His mother, Christie Johnson Hudgins, was charged with involuntary manslaughter in his death, according to the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office.

July 8 – 14-year-old Jaimel Cooper drowned at Busco Beach, a private recreational park near Goldsboro, after witnesses said he got stuck in the bottom. His death has prompted questions about the safety of the facility.

July 16 – Cousins H'Katherine R'Com, 10, and John R'Com Nay, 7, were fishing with family members on the Neuse River when Nay went out in the water, went under and never resurfaced. Police say R'Com tried to rescue the boy and got pulled under as well.

In an unrelated incident the same day, a 15-month-old girl drowned in a backyard swimming pool in Johnston County.

I agree with below comment concerning "things at the bottom of a lake or pond". It is a time old tradition that people in this area go swimming in lakes and ponds. The bottom of these make shift swimming holes include soft mud that when stepped into will create a suction when you try to lift your feet. It can hold you under the water. No ones fault...it's just nature. Also tree stumps can be just below the surface, roots from trees growing along the edges can be floating as well.If you've ever seen a pond drained, there is natural debis left behind. Don't forget NC does have a few alligators & snakes. We tried posting a sign to ask the wildlife to stay out...but they just LOL at us. These places can be fun but remember, you are not in a Pool. Just because someone groomed the beach area where your towel lays...they didn't add SHOCK & Vac it out before you got there. Be aware, be safe.

I have been going to Tucker Lake for about 4 years and when I first started going there, it was better than it is now. The lifeguards that are there now are a complete joke. They are a bunch of little kids that are too busy playing with each other or playing with the park patrons to pay attention and do their job. I absolutely do not rely on them for my son's safety. Last time I went, there was one person manning the "big" slide and the children were going down any way they wanted to, one right after another, not even allowing a safe distance between sliders. I said something to the lifeguard when I got to the bottom and she acted like I hadn't even spoke. It was a shame. It is a nice place to have fun but I am totally surprised that there aren't more tragedies at Tucker Lake. Thank God is all I can say. Sorry for this man. I can only imagine from personal experience that the lifeguards were nowhere to be found. So sorry for the loss and I hope a lesson is learned. They are

There are two websites for Tucker Lake. One pertaining to Hexagon Wake Park and the other is the land owners Tucker lake website. The Tucker lake website has an email about complaints and questions pertaining to Tucker Lake. There have been several complaints about the safety of the park.

Sad, but with this heat people are turning more and more to the water to cool off. More accidents are bound to happen. I make my kids wear a life vest. You just neve know what is at the bottom of a lake or pond that you could get tangled into.

Am so sorry.

Praying for those who loved him.
