Raleigh, N.C. — The North Carolina Attorney General's Office on Wednesday urged people to be wary of a scam based on the national health care reform law.
Callers pretending to be government employees have been asking residents to "verify" information under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the Attorney General's Office said. The callers are trying to obtain personal information, such as Social Security numbers or bank account or credit card information, officials said.
Legitimate government employees never call to ask for personal information, officials said.
Anyone can report a scam in North Carolina by calling the Attorney General's Office toll-free at 1-877-5-NO-SCAM.
