Overturned dump truck snarls early morning traffic on U.S. 1

print friendly

All northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 1 in Apex were closed early Wednesday after a dump truck overturned, blocking the roadway, authorities said.

The accident happened about 1:30 a.m. along the highway near the intersection with Friendship Road, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the truck's dumping mechanism unexpectedly went up, causing the truck to hit a bridge and flip on its side. Troopers don't believe the bridge was badly damaged.

The driver was taken to the hospital. Information on his condition was not immediately available.

The roadway reopened shortly after 6 a.m.

hehehhehe "the truck's dumping mechanism unexpectedly went up". Yeah right ! He left the PTO in gear. It just doesnt "go up" on its own.

Troopers can make observations just like anyone else. The trooper wasn't saying this as a final answer, he was most likely answering a question posed to him by a member of the media. It would be just like if you lived near by and I asked you about the bridge and you said it didn't look bably damaged.

I heard this live on the scanner. I heard police instruct dispatch to get a DOT representative to the scene. Police did not move the truck let alone open the road to traffic until the DOT rep inspected the bridge first.

I (unlike dgcreech) am more concerned for the THOUSANDS of people that will travel over that bridge that a trooper with no engineering degree can say did not sustain any major damage. It could be you or someone you know that will have to rely on what a LEO says about a possibly damaged bridge.

Well dgcreech, if you are so concened over the driver have you called Western Wake med to see how he is doing and enlighten the rest of us, or are you just going to sit back and act hollier than though and rag on someone elses comment?
