Fayetteville city leaders OK hefty parks proposal

print friendly

Fayetteville City Council on Monday night approved a $45 million proposal to build up public parks.

Council members voted 6-4 in favor of the bond package. The money will pay for four outdoor pools, three neighborhood parks and several other public sports parks.

Critics said the proposal is too costly and consists of too many projects.

How about seeing if they can get private companies to build the pools. Charge admission-- that way the people who use the pools are the ones who are paying. I dont see any reason that I should pay taxes so that you can go swimming and having fun while I am at work. Maybe they should have public parks but swimming pools, bowling alleys, movies and all the rest should not be at public expense. I think Rocky Mount might have learned a lesson.

poohpdoo, I agree that the city needs more recreational facilities and that tax moneys should pay for them. My disagreement is with using property taxes to pay for the stuff since only a portion of the population is doing the paying. A sales tax increase would have required everyone to help shoulder the burden.

The point is: Fayetteville is too big of a city with a large population to have only ONE public pool! And it's located in a part of town that no one really wants to go to. So that leaves the YMCA and wherever else they can find a pool! Can't go to apartment complex pools because those are for the residents of those particular complexes. Plus, the parks that they have now are still located in a formation that leaves a lot of people having to still travel a little far to get to a park. So I don't see anything wrong with it. As long as our tax dollars going for something that will make the community a better place to live, then I'm all for it.

Can anyone explain why the word "until" is considered to be offensive?

Once again the property owners are being forced to carry the load with no contributions from those who don't own property. A more fair way to finance these projects would be with a sales tax increase. Someone mentioned a hope that the Big Bang hostages would get a reasonable share of this "progress". I was a victim of the Big Bang annexation (before I moved out of the city) and would be willing to bet that the majority of this money will be spent closer to downtown.
