An Army chaplain who was hit by an SUV while jogging last week has died, authorities said Monday.

Capt. Billy Shane Stauffer was jogging on Rockfish Road in Hope Mills early Friday when he was hit, police said. He died Saturday at a nearby hospital.

No charges will be filed in the case. Hope Mills Police Capt. David Servie said Stauffer was running in the road and that the SUV had the right of way.

Stauffer was assigned to the 28th Combat Support Hospital at Fort Bragg.

As an albeit distant relative of the deceased, I say SHAME ON YOU! to those ppl who are using this story to voice annoyance at slight inconvienences. I can only pray that his wife, mother, brother and children dont ever read this self-serving drivel! He will be missed by many who dont give a darn if he forgot his reflective clothing or was in the wrong part of the road or if the suv should have right of way or not! Go to a town meeting if you feel so strongly. Don't use a story about a mans death to complain about having to wait 10mins to get around someone jogging or cycling. Just know that you will be missed, Shane and my heart goes out to the rest of the family. Love, MamieChell

allinfants: "Why should a driver move over or slow down for another human? When you find the answer to that question, you'll start to understand compassion, the Golden Rule and a host of other pro-human conditions."

Why do those other humans feel they have the right to impose the need to "move over or slow down" on other humans in order to satisfy their own personal wants?

What things do I have the right to impose on you at your expense so I can do what I want?

Does not the person who wants to do certain things have the responsibility to make sure no one else has to sacrifice their own freedom to placate them?

Do you not expect compassion from both parties involved?

Do you expect the driver to be the only one to have to show compassion? Does not the other party have the responsibility to show compassion by not creating the condition needed for compassion by the driver?

s not the responsibility to not create a condition requiring compassion the greater responsibility?

Very Sad to hear. I hate to see folks running or riding bikes on 2 lane main roads while cars are backed up waiting to go around them. It is very dangerous.

I suspect that the SUV driver wasn't charged because he(she?) did nothing wrong.

Why was this SUV driver not charged, yet the dumptruck driver in North Raleigh was charged with manslaughter for hitting a bicyclist? Is it because the bike is considered a vehicle?
