Police have charged a Cary man who admitted to trying to take photos of a boy using the restroom at a Raleigh amusement park.

John Courtney, 46, of 117 Old Bridge Lane, faces a felony charge of indecent liberties with a child and a misdemeanor charge of secret peeping in the June 27 incident.

He's set to appear in court July 19.

According to search warrants for computer equipment belonging to Courtney, the 9-year-old boy's grandfather told police that they were in the bathroom of Adventure Landing on Capital Boulevard when he saw Courtney with what he thought was a cellphone or camera standing at a urinal beside the boy.

Courtney ran away after the grandfather confronted him, according to the search warrant, and hid in some woods until he thought police responding to the report had left.

When Courtney returned to his car in the business' parking lot and tried to leave, police stopped him and questioned him.

Investigators say that's when he admitted to trying to take a photo of the boy.

According to the search warrant, he also admitted to "numerous other offenses similar in nature" in Raleigh and Cary and said he had hidden hard drives that "potentially" had photos from those other occasions, as well as child pornography.

Police seized several computers and external hard drives from Courtney's home, as a result.
