I think whomever had the comment about the spike for the ramps to prevent people traveling in the wrong direction has a very good point and solution. My father was driving and I was riding with him and it had just gotten dark. We stopped to eat and upon leaving and getting ready to re enter the highway he almost turned onto the off ramp which would have meant us traveling the wrong way had I not corrected him. They are poorly lit, designed, and marked. Also, my father is a police deputy back home and he has noticed the poor marking on the roads especially if it is wet here. Also this is a prime reason checkpoints don't work. The HP, county officers, and local police where probably busy at a check point ticketing someone for expired tags, when they could have been patrolling and saw this person or at least had a better chance to see this person along with other crimes going on that they don't get to in a timely mannor because they are busy at the checkpoint.

@WooHoo2You, I don't think he was ranting about they don't cause problems. I think he was pointing out that the punishment in most cases is not proportional compared to other crimes. Which I agree it is. Before jumping down my throat, I think this person should have a punishment and that punishment should be stiff due to the circumstances of this crime. Although, I do notice a lot of people have a position on the justice system, yet a lot of never taken the time to actually go sit and either talk to people in it, or even watch just a day of district court. I'm sure it would be an eye opener for most. Things they think people are getting off on they aren't. Things you think they have no chance and shouldn't get off on they do.

. EVERYDAY i see a police officer violate AT LEAST one of the driving laws you listed above. You cant enforce basic driving laws that the police themselves break - jhk0704

Agreed! Back when you could not just pull someone over for not wearing their seat belt (only ticketed when pulled over for another offense) my ex-husband never wore his seat belt, and he sped 5 miles over the speed limit. I asked him how was he to enforce the law if he didn't follow it himself. My guilt won over while we were married, not sure what he does now, but your point is correct. I had an RPD officer turn left in front of me yesterday, no signal and going about 35-40 through Cameron Village, which is 25. Now, he could have been running hot & on his way to a call but didn't have his blue lights on. RPD just doesn't seem to enforce traffic in town at all. But let a vagrant steal a loaf of bread from the HT and 5-9 units respond.

The solution would be to hire more officers. How? Perhaps if RPD enforced traffic inside the belt-line i.e. illegal lane changes, speeding, stopping in the middle of the cross-walk, using 2 lanes to turn, running stop signs, etc., etc., they would make a lot more $$$ to fund the hiring of more officers.

In order to do that The Police would have to stop breaking these laws themselves. EVERYDAY i see a police officer violate AT LEAST one of the driving laws you listed above. You cant enforce basic driving laws that the police themselves break

! How many police/ hp officers do we have? And how many people live in this state?? In Raleigh alone?? And how were they to know this person would be driving - Ambygirl

In no way blaming the police, driver should be charged. And don't kid yourself, I know for a fact (ex-hubby in law enforcement) there are federal grants (federal safety funds) available to pay the officers to be on extra traffic patrol duty. Most cops work 2-4 jobs because they are paid so poorly, and just to make ends meet.
