Durham, N.C. — A former Durham firefighter who tried to kill himself last week after being charged in a string of robberies was transferred Tuesday from Duke University Hospital to a state-run hospital, authorities said.

Damon Quick, 35, of 902 Estelle Court in Durham, was arrested a week ago during a robbery at the Dollar Tree, at 3823 Guess Road.

He was placed in the Durham County jail last Wednesday morning under a $9 million bond but was taken to Duke Hospital a few hours later after he attempted suicide in his jail cell, authorities said.

His medical condition is unknown.

Quick is also charged in seven other robberies between May 8 and June 1 in which police said he was armed with a gun and wore a green mask. Police investigating the crimes nicknamed him "Green Goblin."

Each robbery happened near closing time, police said, and in each case, he took both cash from the business as well as wallets and cash from employees.

The Durham Fire Department, where he had worked since August 2003, fired him after his arrest.
