Durham police investigators are trying to identify a man who, they say, stole a large amount of meat from a Kroger last week and assaulted a store employee who tried to stop him from leaving.

It happened June 6 sometime after 9 p.m., police said, at the grocery store at 3457 Hillsborough Road.

The man fled in a gray Ford Focus but not before being caught on surveillance cameras.

Police say he is approximately 35 years old, stands about 6 feet to 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs between 160 and 170 pounds. He was wearing a white long-sleeve shirt and jeans.

Investigators want anyone with information about who the man might be to contact the Durham Police Department at 919-560-4582, extension 29254, or Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200.

Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards for information leading to arrests in felony cases, and callers never have to identify themselves.

Much of that food is canned and goes quickly. Canned food is not necessarily unhealthy.

Also, it's not unusual nowadays to find food pantries empty before noon each day.

Rachel - We see the elderly coming in to the store counting coins to buy a can of soup. IMHO - that's shameful in this, supposedly the greatest country on earth.
