Raleigh, N.C. — A man who was working on an underground well at a Raleigh gas station was struck by a car and killed Wednesday afternoon, police said.
The person who called 911 told dispatchers, "A lady just ran over a man that was in a manhole at the gas station."
Randy L. Wilson, who was employed by a private contractor Clean Fuels, was doing work in one of the manholes at Family Fare BP, at 4000 New Bern Ave.
Shortly before 12:30 p.m., a driver pulling away from one of the gas pumps struck Wilson, 50. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
"He has blood running out of his ears, and we can't tell if he is breathing," the caller told emergency dispatchers.
Witnesses provided a description of the car and driver to police, who found Deborah J. Dunkley, 52, a short time later and charged her with misdemeanor death by vehicle and unsafe movement. Dunkley, who was released on a $5,000 bond, will make her first court appearance Friday at 2 p.m.
Police have not said whether Dunkley realized she hit Wilson before driving away.
Investigators want to talk to anyone who might have witnessed the incident but left the area before police arrived. Witnesses who haven’t spoken with police can call Officer Jamie Rigsbee at 919-996-1188 or may call the Raleigh Police Department Tip Line at 919-834-HELP.
