A man died early Thursday after being shot outside an apartment in Wilson, authorities said.

Authorities responding to a call found Ladarius Vontay Sutton, 23, of 620 Academy St. in Wilson, at an apartment on Roundtree Street around 3 a.m. He was taken to Wilson Medical Center, where he died.

Wade Finch, who lives nearby, said he heard the shots.

"Being so close to my house, I jumped up, because it sounded like they were running through my back yard," Finch said. "I couldn't see anybody, but I saw lights on in (neighboring) apartment houses."

Wilson police said they hadn't made any arrests in the case and did not have any information on potential suspects. They did not release any other information.

It's funny how people make comments and obliviously have no clue to what they are talking about. Calvin Woodard is doing a great job as Sheriff which handles the COUNTY issues not the CITY!!

The Sheriff patrols the county and keeps track of the sex offenders in Wilson County, the Wilson Police Department handles issues inside the city limits....so not so sure why the uproar about the sheriff regarding this story.

I respect your opinion but the Sheriff's Dept is county, not city. Look to the police dept. for city and I have no knowledge of them now. I am in Wilson every week and I know I see A LOT more sheriff dept. presence than I used to see. and I was totally against Calvin as sheriff - I was for Wayne and then Johhny. It didn't go my way. and while I think Johnny would have been great, I am impressed by what I've seen with Calvin.

I'm so glad I moved from Wilson! I beg to differ on Calvin Woodard's progress as Sheriff. The city has not changed for the better since he became Sheriff and I think next election, he should be voted out. I feel bad for my friends and family that still live there under his 'protection'.

Check out the report on www.wilsondailytimes.com it doesn't give the boy's name but it does give a long interview from his cousin and neighbors.
