Raleigh police on Tuesday said they are looking for the driver of a car who hit a bicyclist early Sunday near the intersection of Hillsborough Street and Ashe Avenue.

The car, likely a black 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala, should have minor damage to its right front quarter panel and perhaps the right front door, authorities said. The car could also have damage to the right hand rear view mirror housing or the mirror itself may be missing from the housing.

Following the wreck, which happened around 1 a.m., the car fled the scene and was traveling on Ashe Avenue toward Western Boulevard.

Anyone with information about the hit and run should call Raleigh Crime Stoppers at 919-834-4357. Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards for tips that help solve cases.

I hope the biker is OK but I totally agree with Marty King. Bikers gripe and complain about drivers not respecting their right to ride the roadways but I have yet to see a biker who obeys the traffic rules. They absolutely do run lights, many sidle along the curb/gutters making their way to the front instead of taking their "place" in line like cars do and are an obstruction to traffic in general, plain and simple. Sorry bikers but it's time for some truth tellin'!!!!!

To those who wonder if the driver knew if they hit something... I unfortunately hit a squirrel the other day and as small as they are you feel the bump. Run over a rough patch of road or a small object and you feel it. Have your car lightly tapped by another where it does no body damage and you feel it. Trust me, they knew what happened.

I feel bad for anyone that is struck by a by moving vehicle, but I need to make a personal observation. I've been driving since I was 16. I have about 30 years behind the wheel. In the past 5 years, I've observed a Serious decrease in Pedestrian IQs. I see people every day crossing busy roads where there are no cross walks. I see people crossing in Cross-walks against Red Lights. Each time I drive in any shopping center, people step out in front of my truck without looking. People see me backing up my 7,000 pound truck and do their very best to squeeze behind me rather than wait 5 seconds. CITY OF RALEIGH, PLEASE PLEASE Educate your Citizens to be Safer Pedestrians. Start by giving tickets to J-Walkers. A 7,000 pound truck backing up at 2 miles an hour will squash you like a bug.. I even have an Audible Back-up Beeper and people still insist on pushing a baby stroller into my blind spots. Pedestrians scare the heck out of me.. They need education for their own good.

I blame MADD for causing people with one or two beers in their system to be overly paranoid of persecution. We need to revert to common sense DUI laws and raise the limit back to .1

Regardless, the biker was probably at fault anyways, they ride with no courtesy, regard to other traffic and always run stop signs and red lights.

I also question the wisdom of biking at 1 am. NOT that I'm saying that it is the bicyclist's fault, but it is difficult to see them at night. pulstar40

Did they stop and saw they hit someone then fled or did they never realize it? Did the bike have lights? Maybe the driver of the car woke up the next day and thought someone sideswiped his car. Lots of possibilities here and the story leaves a lot of details out. And I WILL blame the bike rider for riding at 1am in the morning.
