A single-car wreck on Interstate 40 East in Raleigh early Tuesday caused traffic delays during the morning commute and sent two people to the hospital.

Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue said the driver, Louis Henry Pittman Jr., 33, suffered life-threatening injuries in the wreck near Lake Wheeler Road around 5:30 a.m. He was listed in critical condition at WakeMed Tuesday evening.

His passenger, Kendell Christopher Jones, 40, has been treated and released.

Pittman faces one count of driving while impaired, police said.

All eastbound lanes were reopened about three hours after the wreck, although congestion lingered in the area.

At one point, eastbound traffic was backed up to Gorman Street, while onlooker delays slowed traffic on I-40 West as far back as the U.S. Highway 1/64 interchange.

No, human nature is just being "nosey", if it wasn't the on-lookers would keep their eyes on the road and it wouldn't take as long to clear an accident. I have always wondered when accidents occur on one side of the road, why is the traffic always slowed down on both sides---Nosey People!

North Carolina Law: Fender Bender Law: The "Fender Bender" law requires motorists to move their vehicles to the shoulder of the road following minor, non-injury crashes. If you don’t follow the law, you could face a $110 fine and court costs.

Move Over Law: Under the "Move Over" law, motorists are required to move over one lane, if possible, or reduce speed for stopped emergency vehicles with flashing lights on the shoulder of the highway, including public service vehicles with amber lights. Violating the law could result in a $500 fine.

Quick Clearance Law: The "Quick Clearance" law centers on getting vehicles out of the roadway. It states that if law enforcement and NCDOT agree that a vehicle and its cargo pose a safety concern, they can move it by any means necessary without facing any liability.

I do not understand why (especially in Charlotte/Mecklenburg area) police/ambulance/emergency crews do not move their own vehicles off the road.

"Move the injured, get the vehicle(s) out of the road, turn off the several hundred blue lights and "investigate" it later. "

Later? You mean after the evidence has been obscured by other skid marks, driven over, wind blown, rained on, etc.? Such an intelligent comment.

Journey, the car was still there as of 8:40 this morning there was a tow truck up in the woods trying to get it out. There were a lot of blue lights going on around there that may have added to the slow downs. Prayers for the folks injured.

The wrecked vehicle was still there at 7am. It was just a single vehicle way off to right shoulder deep in the wood line so there was nothing to see.
