A Jones County couple who ran a suspected puppy mill were found guilty Thursday of 38 counts of animal cruelty.

Glen and Joyce Brown, who were acquitted on 25 other charges, were placed on probation for two years. During that time they won't be allowed to own any animals, and the only animal allowed on their property would be their granddaughter's dog.

The couple's lawyer said they plan to appeal the ruling to Superior Court.

Authorities seized 88 dogs from the Browns' rural property in March. The dogs were turned over to the Wake County SPCA, the Guilford County Animal Shelter and a veterinarian's office for care and eventual adoption.

So does that mean after 2 yrs of probation they can have any animal? There needs to be stricter laws when it comes to animal cruelty. ridiculous. These people should have got prison time instead. some may disagree but that is my opinion! Makes me sick to see the way these poor animal's get treated. :(

I thought animal cruelty was able to be charged as a felony. With 38 counts of ANY charge, especially one as heinous as the case here (photos from spca), our judicial system should be ashamed of themselves to allow these people to only receive 2 years of animal free probation.

Sadly, this is a common type story. Heard more and more. I don't see how these people live with themselves. Oh, I fogot: They don't do anything wrong! They are just trying to make a living! LOL! Right!!!!

We have a couple of "mills" in our subdivision in Franklin County. Reported many times, the breeding continues - one mill actually had a couple of their dogs get loose and ultimately bit a child, needless to say, the dogs no longer exist. However, the mill still continues. So very sad.

Scubagirl pleads, "PLEASE write to your representatives and ask them to pass this ASAP before more animals suffer needlessly!"

The Republicans are in charge. Why, on earth, would they show any compassion?

When trying to pass animal cruelty laws, which group do you think fights us the hardest? They would repeal the current laws if they could. It's "big gubmint", dontchaknow.
