Cumberland County OKs limiting number of dogs per household

The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a limit on the number of dogs allowed on small lots and multi-family properties Monday.

Effective July 1, no more than three adult dogs will be allowed on lots less than a half-acre and no more than two adult dogs will be allowed in areas zoned for multi-family residential housing.

A new pet licensing system goes into effect Jan. 1, 2013.

The ordinance stemmed in part from county animal control staff concerns about its volume of calls.

People who already have more than the allowed number of pets will be allowed to keep them.

The City of Fayetteville is considering a similar ordinance.

you must be a liberal dirk cause you only made a stupid comment bout the dogs. let me repost. oh nowhere in harnett county is their a law how many dogs a person can have either. we had gotten a lawyer tho we wanted to get in a shower we went to project inasmuch in fayetteville about nine in the morning the lady came out when it was like 39 maybe 40 degrees saying our dogs were hot or panting when we had the windows down and air running. she locked the gate told us to let our dogs out so they can run. then she called the pound and said they had no leashes. after we got in the shower got our dogs in the car to see a lawyer she refused to let us out so we could talk to our lawyer bout sueing the property manager. we were held hostage by this lady. you can't hold someone against their will. thats against the law. so we were not breaking the law the crazy lady at operation inasmuch was

hey dirk last time i checked kidnapping was against the law. guess you don't read everything i said

Ah, superman, printing out the ordinance was a good idea. I just confirmed that the Wake County animal control ordinance covers excessive barking. My question is, after you did all the right things by way of making the request of your neighbor, educating your neighbor, and documenting their failure to comply with the law, how did you get the cops to actually enforce it? In our neighborhood, the cops do nothing. They might come out to chit chat with the dog owner, but here we are two years later, dozens upon dozens of calls to the police and animal control, and they still have a yard full of incessant noise makers. It's been very frustrating, as we can't enjoy time in our yard, or even our own living room, due to the noise. We can't enjoy nice breezes through our windows because we need to keep them closed to help drown out the noise. All this in vain,as even with the windows closed, fans and tv on, we are still subjected to the noise.

How do you get the cops to enforce the law?

My neighbor allows his boxer to roam the neigbhorhood. I asked him to keep his dog on a lease but that didnt help. Then I put up signs please keep your dog off my lawn. That didnt help either. I printed out the animal control ordinance for the county and put a copy on his front door. Didnt help either. Then the next time I saw his dog running loose I got out my digital camera and made sure he knew I was taking pictures of his dog running loose. He and his wife no longer speak to us but that is ok. I figure his dog is his problem and not mine.

"Okay, I just have to ask. How exactly do the ones of you complaining that dogs bark propose that people "make" dogs stop barking??"

Bring them inside instead of leaving them outside to bark and annoy neighbors 24/7 would be a good start. Why have 'yard ornaments' that poo all over the place and make noise? If you want a pet, treat it as such.

Another option is one of the many available items for purchase that assist in training the dogs to stop barking. There are devices such as zap collars, citronella collars, even devices you can hang in your yard that emit a noise when the dogs bark-the noise is inaudible to humans.

The issue with these devices is that they are hit or miss. What works great for one dog may not work well for another. They are also pricey. Why should the neighbors have to purchase and install anti-bark devices to shut up other people's dogs? How about being a considerate pet owner and neighbor? Incessant barking is an illegal public nuisance.
