Plane makes emergency landing at RDU

print friendly

An oil leak forced a pilot to make an emergency landing shortly after taking off from Raleigh-Durham International Airport Sunday morning, airport spokesman Bob Rogers said.

Staff discovered an oil leak in the engine of American Airlines flight 1645 just after taking off for Chicago at 8:12 a.m., Rogers said. Control problems scrapped the first attempt at an emergency landing, but the plane touched down safely on the second try about 20 minutes after takeoff.

Rogers said oil leaks aren't that uncommon, and the flight was scrapped as a precaution. None of the 138 passengers were injured.

An American Airlines spokesperson said the company was bringing in another plane for a rescheduled flight Sunday afternoon.

I was on this flight... The issue was discovered while we were in the air. The pilot lost pressure to the engine and shut it down - was my understanding. The first attempt at landing was quite hairy.. The second attempt I thought he was going to drive the right wing into the runway.

Who discovered the leak? Was it ground staff finding a pool on the gound after the plane left or was it flight staff finding a problem in the air? What type aircraft was it? Was it engine oil or hydraulic fluid? Control problems are a huge issue and indicate hydraulic fluid loss, not oil loss. There is only one sentence in this article addressing the risk to safety that was present and that was the "control problem". Remember the United Airlines DC-10, flight 232 in Sioux City, Iowa in 1989? "Control problems" are a big deal!
