A Fayetteville woman was charged with voluntary manslaughter Wednesday in the weekend shooting death of 23-year-old Jerry Dale Martin Jr.

Gracie Ramirez, 34, surrendered to authorities at the Cumberland County jail and was later turned over to military officials. She has been in the Army for more than a decade, served two tours in Afghanistan and one in Iraq.

Family members say Martin was horsing around with his mother and others outside in the 1500 block of Mawood Avenue shortly before 8:30 p.m. Saturday when Ramirez misinterpreted the tussle and, thinking she was breaking up a fight, shot him.

He was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where he died.

She was standing her ground, she has a given right to protect what is hers.. She should be released and the others charged.

"La Mangosta Negra-This is a classic example of a concerned neighbor doing the right thing, and the mom protecting her out of control child."

you are nuts! this is an example of someone not minding their own business; she didnt even ask if they were fighting she just came out and yelled at him to leave them alone and when he stood up and said she isnt going to shoot anyone she shot him! They werent fighting they were playing around; last time i checked having fun with your family wasnt a crime or fighting... now lets see if they pull the PTSD card, she even looks crazy...

The whole story is in the Fayetteville Observer. http://fayobserver.com/articles/2012/05/16/1178405?sac=fo.home

ok lets blame it on PTSD like everything else.

OMG...I know that soldier. Man, you just never know what's going through a person's head when they snap.
