Durham, N.C. — Durham police are searching for a 21-year-old man who is accused of impersonating a police officer and trying to get into an apartment.
Police say Dwight Whitaker Jr., of 311 S. LaSalle St., went to Duke Manor Apartments on South LaSalle Street Tuesday night and told residents that he was a sergeant in a gang unit and was investigating a larceny. He told the residents he didn't have any business cards because he was off-duty, police said.
When the residents did not let him in, Whitaker told them he would return soon with a supervisor, police said.
Anyone with information on Whitaker’s whereabouts is asked to call the Durham Police Department’s front desk at 919-560-4427.
Durham police officers carry badges and picture identification. If you have doubts that someone is an officer, ask to see the identification. You can also call 911 to have them verify that a legitimate officer is at your location.
