The Raleigh-Cary metropolitan area population grew 2.9 percent from April 1, 2010, to July 1, 2011. That rate was the fifth highest nationwide.

The U.S. Census Bureau defines a metro area as having a population of at least 1 million.

Other areas in North Carolina also experienced growth during the same 15-month period. Dunn was named the fifth fastest growing micro area and ranked number one in population increase among micro areas.

Micro areas contain at least one urban cluster of 10,000 to 50,000 people, according to the Census Bureau.

Hoke County was the eighth fastest growing county, expanding at a rate of 4.9 percent during the time period.

I just moved to the area from Saudi Arabia. This place is so pretty here with the green trees. My family and I are joining others in building a new Mosque to the glory of Mohammed. We love NC and love America! Allah Akbar, God is great and Mohammed is his prophet. Thanks you to the people of North Carolina for giving my family a new home.

Watch out Dunn, Cary's coming for you..

I'm from NC but moved up to small town New England for several years and at first folks up there seemed wary of me being "that southern kid" but once they got to know me they accepted me and treated me like they had known me forever. I've found in the south people are much more "nice to your face, stab you in the back as soon as you get out of earshot" while northerners will let you know they don't like you to your face instead up putting on the false facade. I will say as a southerner I found that aspect of northern attitude refreshing.

"And you are completely wrong about Northerners having the same attitude about people moving to the region. If a Southerner asked me for some BBQ and sweet tea back home, I'd hand them a chicken leg smothered in BBQ sauce, a glass of sweetened iced tea, and compliment them on their cute accent.

Why the hostility and anger?"

Bingo! Well said. Why the hostility and anger? Not from all southerners - just those who can't get over what happened 150 years ago.

"Why is it that people from up North come South and complain about it and try to change things? Food, culture, ect. If a Southern went North and asked for BBQ & sweet tea they would be told go back home"

Interesting. I'm from up north, moved to NC after high school because I loved the area. The two things I didn't quite like was the overbearing racism coupled with the lack of tolerance for 'outsiders'.
