DURHAM, N.C. — Police are investigating a wreck at the intersection of Fayetteville Street and Hanson Road in Durham on Wednesday that left a motorcyclist dead.

The wreck happened just before noon when a car pulled out from Hanson Road onto Fayetteville Street and struck one of three motorcycles heading south, police said. The other two motorcyclists were able to veer out of the way and avoid the collision.

The motorcyclist, Tomas Sebastian Castillo, 33, of Durham, was taken to Duke University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Phil Ford, one of the two motorcyclists who was able to avoid the car, said Thursday that he plans to conduct a charity ride in memory of Castillo.

"He was a good friend. He died doing what he really loved," Ford said as he and other motorcyclists gathered near the collision site. "He worked on bikes, and he was a family man."

The driver of the car, Hazeline Rempson, of Durham, wasn't injured.

No charges have been filed, but the wreck remains under investigation, police said.
