Raleigh to test downtown walking signs

RALEIGH, N.C. — Signs posted downtown to promote walking in Raleigh will be used in a trial public education program, city officials said Tuesday.
The City Council voted unanimously to accept as a gift the Walk Raleigh signs that graduate student Matt Tomasulo posted at three intersections, and they city will study response to the signs over the next three months, officials said.
Tomasulo said he got the idea for Walk Raleigh after a friend mentioned that it took only a few minutes to walk between Glenwood South and Seaboard Station. He and some friends installed 27 signs in January that tell how long it takes to get to nearby points of interest.
People can also scan the signs with their smart-phones to get a customized walking route on Google Maps.
Raleigh will evaluate the program this summer before deciding whether to expand it or end it.
