Fires damage two homes in northern Wake County

Firefighters in northern Wake County had a busy night Friday, responding to two blazes that badly damaged homes in Wake Forest and Youngsville.

The first fire started in the kitchen of a house at 403 South Cross St. near White Street around 9 p.m. Firefighters rescued a cat and dog from the blaze, but the house suffered extensive damage.

Crews responded to a second fire at 2636 Dun Loring Dr. just after 9 p.m. No one was home when the fire started, but Wake Forest fire officials said the house was a "total loss."

Firefighters had to shuttle water to the second fire because of a lack of fire hydrants in the area.

Neighbors on both sides of the house were also forced to evacuate their homes while fire crews worked to put out the blaze.

No injuries were reported in either fire. The causes of the fires were under investigation Saturday.
