A Fayetteville woman was charged with child abuse after her 4-year-old child was injured during a Wednesday night wreck, police said.

Lisa Michelle Lovell, 41, didn't belt the child into a car seat, and the child suffered minor injuries when the car slammed into a pole on Ramsey Street near Fernwood Drive shortly before 11 p.m., police said.

Lovell was charged with misdemeanor child abuse, failure to secure a child in a vehicle restraint system and possession of marijuana. Police said they also suspect her of driving while impaired but are awaiting the results of a lab report.

Lovell's vehicle crossed two lanes of traffic before hitting the pole, police said.

ProudBlackSingleMother, she wasn't charged with abuse preemptively, she was charged after the child got hurt. By the way, that is child abuse. She is a driver so she should know the law. If she was driving while impaired, with pot in the and with a child not buckled in and on top of that had an accident that was clearly her fault, she was charged properly.

I think more parents should be arrested for not having their children in a car seat or safety belt. I see this all the time and it's very disturbing. Not only is the child in imminent danger but the child becomes a danger to anyone in the car by becoming a moving target, if involved in an accident. I never really stopped to think about that before I had 2 relatives who became first responders on the local Fire Dept. Anything not secured in the vehicle becomes like a catapult and can do serious damage, even kill other passengers. Parents need to remember there is a reason we have laws to keep children in car seats!

Foster care may not be the best choice, but it is far better than a mother like this.dwr1964

I was orphaned at a very young age and made my way through the foster care system. It's evident you never did. No, it's not better than a mother like this so please don't remark about something you know nothing about.

Foster care may not be the best choice, but it is far better than a mother like this.

You can't charge someone with abuse preemptively... attempted abuse, carelessness, yes but no abuse took place.

These cops need to stop flinging charges hoping one will stick. Disgraceful.
