Fayetteville, N.C. — Police arrested a Fayetteville man Friday after he is allegedly tried to set his brother on fire.

Roderick Mardell Whitted, 39, of Nottingham Drive, is charged with attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. He was being held in the Cumberland County jail under a $100,000 bond.

Officers responded to a reported domestic disturbance in the 500 block of Nottingham Drive shortly before 2 a.m. and heard from Whitted's brother that Whitted threw gasoline on him and tried to ignite it.

Witnesses said the Whitted brothers had been drinking the night before, and Roderick Whitted awakened his brother to get a ride to the store for more alcohol. When the brother said no, Whitted then left the room and returned with the gasoline, witnesses said.

The gasoline didn't ignite, and the man wasn't injured.

Three other adults and three children, ages 7, 11, and 13, also were in the home at the time, police said.
