DURHAM, N.C. — Hazmat crews were trying to clean up about 2,500 gallons of fuel that spilled into a Durham pond Tuesday.

The fuel leaked from a tank in the 4500 block of Emperor Boulevard, tainting the pond and surrounding soil, Durham Fire Chief Dan Curia said.

No nearby buildings were evacuated.

It was unclear what caused the leak, but Curia said cleaning up the fuel would require an extensive effort.
