SPRING LAKE, N.C. — Restaurants can reopen and Spring Lake residents stop boiling their water since tests have showed the water is safe to use, town officials said Sunday.

About 50 restaurants had been closed and 6,600 people asked to boil water since tests on Friday indicated the presence of fecal coliform bacteria (E. coli) was detected in water samples.

Tests on seven samples have since come back negative for the bacteria, Town Manager Tommy Burns said. The boil-water advisory was lifted early Sunday.

"There is no longer a potential problem with the water," Burns said.
