Duke student killed in crash; driver charged with DWI

A single-vehicle crash near Duke University left one student dead early Thursday, Durham police said.

DURHAM, N.C. — A single-vehicle crash near Duke University left one student dead early Thursday, Durham police said. 

A passenger in the vehicle, 21-year-old Matthew Grape, of Wellesley, Mass., was pronounced dead at the scene. Grape was a senior.

At approximately 2:40 a.m., a Chevrolet Equinox driven by Lee Royster, 21, of Hickory, ran off the road and struck a tree. The vehicle went down an embankment and landed on its roof. 

Royster, also a senior, was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Investigators charged Royster with driving while impaired. Further charges are pending.

The crash occurred near the intersection of Duke University Road and Academy Road on the south side of Duke's campus.
