Johnston County drivers warned about stranded motorist scam

print friendly

Law enforcement in Johnston County are warning drivers to be cautious when stopping to assist stranded motorists.

The warning was issued after a man was robbed when he pulled over to help a woman and child standing beside a parked car on Swift Creek Road near U.S. Highway 70.

Deputies said when the Good Samaritan stopped two men armed with guns got out of the parked car and robbed him of money and jewelry.

Deputies say drivers who spot a stranded driver should call the state Highway Patrol by dialing *HP on a cell phone.

@as400, when you approach a stranded car to help a woman and her baby, do you have your .357 loaded and drawn with the safety off? If not, how can you expect to defend yourself against suddenly appearing assailants?

Years ago a teenaged crying girl knocked on my door late at night. I was home alone with 2 small children. She said she ran her car off the road and wanted to use my phone to call someone to come get her. I said I would be happy to call the PD for her. She insisted she wanted to come in and call her mom. I told her give me the number and I'll call her. I could see her getting irritated because I wouldn't let her in. I finally shut and locked the door. I looked out the window and she and a man were running across my lawn. I called the police. Sure glad I listened to my gut and not my heart.

I really like the judged by 12 vs carried by 6 comment. :-)

I'm a single female and I don't stop for ANYONE on the road. I'm usually alone but even if I weren't alone I wouldn't stop. If you think there is a problem call 911. Don't take a chance!!
