Southern Pines, N.C. — Police on Friday charged a Moore County man in the beating death of a woman Thursday afternoon.

Garland Scott Beal, 49, of East Pennsylvania Avenue in Southern Pines, was charged with murder in the death of Terry Lynn Baker. He was being held without bond in the Moore County jail.

Investigators said Baker, 50, of Pinehurst, and Beal knew each other, and Baker stopped at Beal's apartment Thursday afternoon. An argument ensued, and both grabbed weapons at some point, police said, noting officers seized both a knife and a metal pole at the crime scene.

Beal hit Baker with the pole and continued attacking her after she was on the ground, witnesses told police. Bystanders had to push him away from her, police said.

Baker was pronounced dead at the scene, and her body was sent to a medical examiner for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
