LUMBERTON, N.C. — Robeson County deputies said Wednesday that they were searching for a gunman who shot at a car on Interstate 95 over the weekend and then robbed the occupants when the car stopped.

A South Carolina woman told authorities that she was southbound on I-95 Sunday afternoon when someone shot at her car near Lumberton. She said she pulled off to the shoulder of the highway near Exit 25, and she and her four passengers got out to check for damage.

As they were getting back into the car, a masked man in a gray hooded sweatshirt appeared and pointed a shotgun at the passenger-side window, witnesses told authorities.

"He had the shotgun to her head. Her mom jumped out of the car and started pleading for her life and for our lives," victim Maggie Hennigan said. "While we were in the car, he couldn't break our window. So instead, he came to my side of the window, and then he went and tried to pull the door."

Two of the passengers said they handed the gunman their wallets containing about $500 total, and he fled into some nearby woods.

Authorities said they believe the same man tried to rob a nearby gas station earlier Sunday.
