APEX, N.C. — An Apex officer spotted a fire in an apartment complex around midnight Tuesday and awakened the residents so they could get out safely, police said.

The officer, whose name wasn't released, was doing a routine patrol when he spotted smoke coming from the Linwood Apartments, 811 James St., police said. He called in the fire and banged on doors to wake up residents, who all escaped unharmed.

Investigators said the fire started in the back of an end unit in a four-apartment building, but they haven't determined the cause.

One apartment had fire damage, while another was damaged by smoke.

The Red Cross was helping the displaced residents find shelter.
