More Fort Bragg soldiers heading to Haiti

Those soldiers are members of the 4th Psychological Operations Group's 3rd and 9th Battalions.

As of Wednesday, about 3,000 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division's 2nd Brigade Combat Team are in Haiti, in addition to roughly 250 soldiers from the XVIII Airborne Corps.

Airmen at Pope Air Force Base are also involved, flying the soldiers and 2,500 tons of cargo into the country.

On the ground, soldiers have distributed 31,000 gallons of water and 125,000 meals.

Lt. Gen. Frank Helmick, the commanding general of the XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg, said that soldiers are doing a "spectacular job in conditions that are less than optimal."

Troops have been focusing on passing out food and water to earthquake victims, but Helmick said soldiers are also involved in rescue and recovery efforts.

On Saturday, the Haitian government declared an end to the official search and rescue efforts. However, on Tuesday, soldiers from the 82nd Airborne rescued a man who had been trapped in rubble for 12 days.

Helmick said there are still Americans unaccounted for in Haiti.

“We will not leave a fallen comrade or American citizen without a deliberate process to find them,” he said.
