I'm meteorologist, Kat Campbell. Today is a WRL weather alert day and we have new information. The risk for severe storms has been expanded to the northwest. It now includes Raleigh and the level two threat for severe storms. The higher risk was also expanded a bit north including southern Pines at Goldsboro, Fayetteville and Clinton. Still under that level two storm threat, damaging wind gusts and hail. The primary concerns though an isolated tornado can't be ruled out. We begin to see a few storms popping up as we get toward 23 o'clock and then those storms become more numerous, especially along in east of I 95 as we get toward the evening commute, but we could see a second line of some storms try to congeal together and that's the one that would move through the triangle a bit closer to dinner time tonight though, the threat looks like it ends closer to eight o'clock overnight. Skies clear. We'll be on the lookout perhaps for the northern lights between about two and five AM. Saturday morning, check in on WRL news starting at four for an update on that. We're watching this front. It's along this front that we have the focus for most of the severe concern and that's why the higher concern is in our southern counties. But behind the front, we've got a big drop in humidity and even temperatures on the way for the weekend, it's going to be feeling refreshing outside for Mother's Day weekend. 74 the high on Saturday, a 20% chance of rain. Saturday night and Sunday 79 with mostly sunny skies for mom. Let's take an hour by hour. Look at Mother's Day on Sunday by two o'clock. We're up to 76 degrees dinner time. Temperatures in the mid seventies waking up to temperatures in the mid fifties around 6 a.m. Future cash shows a quiet start to the day. Saturday. It's as we get toward the late evening that we could begin to see just a few isolated showers passing by in our northern counties. Those clear out for Sunday, the sun is back out and shining bright for Mother's Day. A nice gorgeous day. 79. It'll be feeling great outside on Sunday, your seven day forecast. No more eighties and, or I should say no more nineties in sight. We've got seventies and eighties across the board. A couple of nights in the fifties coming up here and then as we look ahead to next week, a stormy pattern looks like it's on the way for the middle of next week, especially Tuesday and Wednesday.

Ok. Rock Sebastian was mentioned, the ac Sebastian mentioned today, it seemed pretty spirited practice that everybody got some got out of their system. Yeah, I mean, that's the only way you can do. It. Certainly don't want to feel sorry for yourselves or anything that it's a new day and you got a new challenge tomorrow, put our best foot forward, you reconfigured the power play units a little bit in practice today is that I'm assuming it's more about execution than personnel at this point. Yeah, it always is. It always comes down to that. We had good players and maybe it was two units doesn't really, you know, scrambling the players around. I don't know how much that's gonna change. You gotta get a little more, um, dialed in on, on, uh, the execution part. You had tr check here for a couple of years. Is there anything that he's doing this series of surprises? No, we talked about him. Yeah. No, and we knew he was a good player so we got him and tried to keep him but didn't work out. I mean, business and, uh, you know, he's certainly been a huge factor how difficult is Canar to deal with. I mean, you know, obviously scored as many points in the head but he's been hardly the only guy that's, well, they got, they got that. I mean, like some real high talent. I mean, that's, that's, you know, you, you could tend to shut them down or try to for a little while but they just need a, a hair and all of a sudden they make you pay and that's, that's why they're elite, you know, um, among the other things that they do, but that's, that's the separator, you, your top on everything we ask for that, you know, below them. They, they're generating all the other ones are generating chances but the goal is high. Is there any concern with that aspect of it? Um, well, yeah, I mean, it's definitely concern. That's why we're in a hole we're in as well. But it's, it's, you know, like, what are you gonna do? You gotta, we know that one area we have to be better at and then the rest side we can't fault around it because it's just, you know, otherwise you have no chance. So we're, we're, you know, in a tough spot. We know that, but it's the old story boring where you gotta just worry about one game and see where it goes, what's missing on the power play that was there and the amateur series there, we'll see what's not. Yeah, I think we're just a little off on. Um, well, it's, listen, you gotta give them credit. I think that's the first thing you do. They're, they're doing their system really well and they're knowing when the pressure and what not, and we just haven't handled that the way we normally do. And I think that's really the beginning of it. Right. Obviously you guys have had a high shot volume for the first three games. Do you think just Durkin's finding more confidence through the more shots he sees? Is there any, you know, adjustment to make under? That's a question for him. I mean, you, you, you know, I think he's made a lot of quality saves too. I mean, I looked at him today and there's a couple that are well, world class, I mean, that and that's a couple that go the other way. That's the difference. I mean, you're not talking about it all you got, you gotta get better shots. I mean, he's been the difference and there's, there's no way around it and you got to give him credit and, you know, you can say we're not getting good enough shots, but you're making some good saves too. Have you made a decision yet on where you're going in that? No, no. Yeah. Right back to and we keep going power for all these reasons. Just do you, do you guys need to make quicker decisions with party, party? I mean, it's the right decision. It's not quicker. I mean, we were good all year. It's just right now we have, uh, you know, really? Yeah, I didn't love it again. The is in this series, I thought it was ok. But we, we hit a three game snag here and the wrong time of the year to hit it. What is that? Is that comfort in routine as a hockey player? You do the same things all season and then things get difficult like this. Do you, do you find some comfort in the routines that you have? Yeah, that's a good question. Um, I think you probably do, you know, um, something you can rely on something, you know, it's that they always, that next day mentality that we have in this league. And, um, and what's done is done, you gotta worry about the next thing that's on your plate. So, and I think that's, that's a good way to look at it. How do you balance desperation and what that means for your guys versus overdo it a bit. Yeah, I think the one thing that I, I love always about this group is that they, and you watch this fight. I mean, we pretty much always play that way. So it's not about, you know, I try to do too much or too long and I think they, they, they do what they always can and I'm assuming I'll do that again tomorrow. Consider the circumstances where you're happy with where your team work today. Very p yeah, very good. I mean, we, we all are grown here, man. We understand the situation but what you have to also approach it the right way and it's a great opportunity. We're still, we're still playing and uh you know, I think the focus is just on trying to find that to get that much better. All right. Thanks a lot. Thanks for the great.

On behalf of the LAA, I would like to congratulate you. You started off during a tough time as students and many of you probably remember that first semester and what it was like during those times as of today, you are our newest members of the Law Alumni Association. We hope that you will be engaged that you will take part and that you will always be a part of UN C law School. Thanks to our wonderful faculty and our incredible staff. You are well prepared to begin your careers. Some of you will end up in private practice, some of you in public service, some of you in business, some of you in teaching some of you in clerkships. So you're gonna have a lot of opportunities to be engaged as you move through your life, as you're doing this. You will have these opportunities to also make a difference, not just as incredible lawyers who are well trained, but it's incredible leaders in your communities and in our state and in our nation. One of the things that I would recommend that you consider are the ways to give back the knowledge that you have gained you know how to analyze, you know, how to prioritize, you know, how to find solutions. When you do that for the lives of the people around you, you will make a lasting impact on them and a lasting difference in your community. Take advantage of those opportunities spread what Carolina Law has done for you throughout our area and our nation, your life will be much richer as a result of that. One of the things that, and, and you're gonna have to forgive me on a personal note, I'm an old guy and I've been so blessed to have a lot of opportunities and every time that I took advantage of one of those opportunities and I felt like I might have made a difference. It made me feel so good and made my life so much richer. So take advantage of those opportunities once again, on behalf of the LA A. Congratulations. Good afternoon. It is such an honor to have the opportunity to address this incredible group of people today, Carolina Law class of 2024. How are we feeling? My name is Wills Moyer. And I've had the privilege of serving as the Student Bar Association president for this past academic year. The Student Bar Association is the governing body for students and operates as the law school student government. I served as my class as president during our one hour and two years as well in these roles. I've had the opportunity to meet and connect with many of my fellow classmates and preparing for my remarks today. I've been reflecting on the past three years and what a transformational time it has been some days, I feel like I've been in law school for my entire lifetime in other days. It feels as if it has just started in the past three years. There were definitely times that I became so wrapped up in law school that I lost sight of its greater purpose to serve as a stepping stone in all of our legal careers. Law school is the last hurdle to becoming an attorney. Well, the second to last hurdle followed by one tiny more little hurdle passing the bar. But regardless, this 36 month journey is coming to a close. And I'd like to share some thoughts on the ways we have grown and developed during this time to start. There's intellectual growth while we do have some classmates who arrive to school already, having obtained advanced degrees. I think I speak for everyone. When I say the academic experience of law school has provided unique challenges and rigor for all of us. But I encourage us to also appreciate the sheer amount we have learned. And how far we have come equally important to the academic development is the personal growth in maturing. The class of 2024 has a wide age range spanning roughly 20 years and varying levels of professional experience in the past three years have gotten married, started, families, lost, loved ones, had Children broken up, made a whole lot of friends who knows, maybe even started a band, but none of us did this on our own. So thank you to all of our family and friends, both joining us today as well as those who are offering love and support from afar. We would not be here without you all. August 2021 was a hopeful time and not just for those of us beginning our journey as law students, the worst of the pandemic seemed to be behind us and life was starting to more closely resemble normal. I've always been grateful that we started our one hour classes in person or at least hybrid while zoom serves some great functions. It is not the best tool for community building. Much of the legal profession is inherently adversarial. But I think we as a class have done a good job of trying to engage in good faith discussion and not letting in class disagreements evolve into personal disputes. Fast forward through nine months of hard work. In May 2022 we took our last final of our first year constitutional law. Just a few weeks later, the subject itself underwent drastic change. As 40 years of precedent was overturned regardless of your personal stance on issues of reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy. I think everyone can agree. That was a timely moment to be studying how our individual rights are impacted by judicial interpretation. Our second year of law school offered more freedom to take courses better suited to our individual academic interest. One of Carolina Law's many strengths is the element of choose your own adventures. And it's been so inspiring to see and witness the various career aspirations and practice areas our classmates have chosen to pursue. I won't dwell too much on the two L experience. Um Some call it too l for a reason, but I think I can go out on a limb and say that most of us agree. It was a whole lot of work. I was grateful for my summer internship for reminding me that the end was in sight and a world beyond just reading cases and completing site checks existed where clients are actual people who need our help. Our three all year began in August 2023. Yet at the start of the semester before we'd even adjusted to our new class schedule, our community was devastated by the impact of gun violence. Many of us were in class when reports of an active shooter circulated and the UN C campus went into lockdown. Hours of uncertainty followed while we were fortunate enough to escape escape physical injury. It is a day that I know will stick with me for years to come as we hold doctor Ji Yen's family in our hearts forever though. No professor should ever be forced to worry about whether she or students will be gunned down as they sit in class. I'll always be grateful for Professor Thomas who helped comfort and calm a group, a classroom of 80 plus students. Finally, I'd be remiss not to acknowledge the absence of a dear friend and classmate of mine today, Jamie Marsicano has been unable to return to Un C's Campus after being indicted for criminal charges relating to public organizing in Atlanta, Georgia. I will not attempt to talk about the merits of the pending case but rather recognize how truly amazing it is that Jamie is still graduating on time. Despite these challenges, we all know that completing law school is hard enough. I think few of us can imagine the difficulty of finishing coursework while also aiding in your own defense. It has been unfortunate to see due process rights turned on their head and a shame that Jamie who is kind brilliant and welcoming was viewed with a presumption of guilt rather than innocence. Jamie's treatment by the UN C system is a reminder of the legal landscape that we are entering today. This is a precarious moment for the political environment of our state and the judicial integrity of the nation's highest courts. Despite some of this uncertainty, I'm confident that Carolina Law has prepared us well for what lies ahead. The title of lawyer carries recognition from the community as well as an expectation to counsel and advocate on behalf of those who need us. I truly feel honored to know each of you sitting before me and I'm excited to follow along and see what comes next in everyone's professional journey. It's been such a blessing to learn alongside y'all for the past three years. I'm forever grateful for this school and the relationship ships has brought me and the opportunities that will follow. Congratulations again to the class of 2024. We have a lot to be proud of. Thank you, Jim and Wheels. At this time, I have the honor of recognizing graduates who have distinguished themselves in various ways. First, I would like to recognize the 2024 inductees of the James E and Carolyn B Davis Society. The Davis Society is named for Jim and Carolyn Davis. Jim was a 1973 graduate of our law school who died only eight years after his graduation. Carolyn died two years later, the Davis family and friends established an award at Carolina Law to perpetuate their memory. The award recognizes each year eight outstanding third year students nominated by faculty staff and their peers who have demonstrated the qualities Jim and Carolyn Davis embraced and modeled this year. 39 members of the class of 2024 were nominated by faculty staff and fellow students from those nominees. Eight were selected as this year's Davis Society members. These students embody what it means to be a leader and to serve exceptional advocate, compassionate pillars of our community. These are just a few of the words that describe their generosity of spirit and their motivation to succeed. I invite each of the eight to stand and remain standing as I call out their names. So, um, it's just, it's just part of it. Um, I think our five on five games been been good and, um, obviously special teams, we need to share that up. And, um, just, yeah, obviously that, that needs to be a focal point moving forward. You got a fine line to walk, you know, wanting to be a physical game with all that but not to take the foolish penalties that give them opportunities. Yeah, I was just luck at last game. We had, uh, uh, most of our penalties are stick penalties. So, um, just need to start checking with your body instead of your stick and, um, I was guilty of one and there was a few other ones. So, uh, you just stay away from those ones and we'll be fine. Do you, do you embrace the pressure of having to come back here down? Two? Oh. And having a chance to maybe push it back the other way if you guys can get it done today. Yeah, I, I had a coach in junior hockey told me you're, you're not this until you lose at home. That's, that's been, he said that and we haven't lost at home. So, um, they, they did their job, they won their two at home. Now it's our turn to do ours and, um, starts with tonight and try and you, you win your games at home and then it goes to uh best of three, but we'll focus on tonight as a leader on the team. How important can your impact and what you and the other leaders do to try and turn the tide here. Um Yeah, I, I honestly, we need to come out and play, play our best games, especially here. This, this needs to be the best game of the series tonight. Obviously, we're, we're down too, so you need to push as hard as you can. And um I don't think any, any of us are gonna change the way we're playing. We just need to find maybe that little bit more and um we'll uh have everybody kind of follow suit but um, you look at Fishy Jordan me slavo every everybody in there. We, we're, we're up for it. So we're, we're looking forward to have you guys said anything to the team, have some kind of player meeting after the first two games. No, no, we haven't done that. I know you guys haven't practiced as a group since prior to game too, but have you talked about changes on the power play? What you can do to generate more shots and find more open works? That's a question for Roddy. I'm not in the power play meeting so well, I spoke after game two about, there's a lot, there's still a lot of belief in your room. Uh, despite how frustrated you guys were, can you speak to that? And, and does that come from the experience? And, and I don't know how, how frustrated we are. If we score in overtime, then we're sitting here 11 and it's, uh, when you guys are asking different questions, it went to double overtime and um, the, and then we're, we're trying to tie it late in game one. It's not like they've come in and completely outplayed us two games. It's, it's, they did their job at home, they scored in overtime to make it 20 and now it's our job to respond. All right. I don't think it's, you know, how can we find that little extra, you know, play here or there? That makes a difference and, you know, uh that, that's really what it's about character as a coaching staff in those meetings. Have you discussed any strategies of how to get the power play going and generate more chances to score? Yeah, I mean, obviously we, we, that's uh an area we wanna get better at. They did a nice job up there and you know, there's, there's areas that we can be better for sure. And, um, you know, we're gonna have to be, obviously we go back to Freddie tonight. Um, yeah. No. Yeah. No, we're gonna go cooch tonight. Um, uh, you made a change in overtime with moving Tony onto the second unit. I was, I didn't know if that was maybe, uh, trying to get more out of the power play or was it more? Maybe not loading up, Shay so much with minutes. Both. Yeah, both. Yeah, I mean, Brady is playing a Ton and Tony, we know we can do it. It's just, you know, we had to get power play all year and Brady was running on that unit, but we know Tony is capable of it. So it's a little bit of both there. You said the change with, with the goalie? Um, well, I think, you know, Freddie's played really well, but he's also played a lot and I think, uh, give him a little rest is the best thing you've said that you're not worried, you never have been worried about couch's ability to step right back in despite knocking the play off. And what has he been doing? Especially the majority of his time. Is it kind of split between watching film and practicing? Is he doing something different? No, just getting ready. Practice. You ready? I mean, he doesn't, I don't know how much film work he does. I mean, it's the goal is just getting himself ready. He does work with Polly, but I mean, at the end of the day it's, I think, uh, you know, he's fresh and hopefully that was a great game. You anticipated, you said yesterday, you anticipated, who is he getting back in? Is that what you're gonna do today? He's fine. Right. Do you see this as a matchup series? Like as far as sometimes there, there are, sometimes there's, they're not for you. Is this a matchup series? And do you have more of an advantage because of that people? Um, yeah, I mean, you have certain game plan going in, you know, certain, you know, maybe guys you wanna play against but it really, um that's, it's, um, yes and no. Uh uh I mean, obviously there's more about um, the d matching up really more than even the floors. But yeah, I mean, we'd love to get our top guys against their top guys. Your estimation is to check out, do anything differently as a goalie playing behind your group. Well, he's got a different demeanor. I mean, that's obvious and he said he's really comical and creature is a little more passionate and, you know, wes his emotions are on his sleeve. But yeah, I know they both pretty good goalies. Coach, a player like this, a tr check for the Rangers who scored in every playoff game so far. I just want to stop them to stop his momentum from getting going. Well, I mean, there's no different game plan for him than anyone else. You gotta do your best when you're out there. And, um, you know, we know him very well. Good player.
